Out of date information on a website is like putting telephone customers on hold. Today, there are so many competing websites that potential customers will bypass an out of date site and move on to another website.
Another important reason to maintain/update a website is to help with placement on search engines. A search engine compares the current data on a website to the last version it catalogued. This explains why a new website has great placement on the search engines and over a period of time slips in the ranking.
Even if the basic information does not change often, it's a good idea to update a website with recent news and events. Good websites give viewers a reason to return to the site.
The html code of webpages should get periodic cleaning. Over time, as changes and updates are made to a webpage, unnecessary html tags can slow a webpage's loading time. This "clutter" can also seriously impact a website's search engine ranking.
